What is a Developmental Screening?
A simple check-in to support your child’s growth.
Developmental screening helps parents and professionals understand how a child is growing and learning compared to other children their age. It’s a helpful way to celebrate your child’s progress and identify any areas where extra support might be beneficial.
What areas are looked at?
Screenings look at several important areas of development, including:
-
Hearing and vision
-
Speech and language
-
Movement and motor skills
-
Thinking and learning
-
Social and emotional development
We know that children may not always feel comfortable in a new environment. That’s okay! Our team may also use observation and talk with parents or caregivers to get a complete picture of your child’s development.
Screening vs. Evaluation — What’s the difference?
A developmental screening is a quick overview of how your child is developing.
An evaluation is a more detailed look at a specific area (such as speech or motor skills) to better understand your child’s strengths and needs.
If needed, an evaluation helps determine whether additional support or services would be helpful.
What if my child doesn’t pass the screening?
First, don’t worry—this is more common than you might think. A screening result does not mean something is wrong. It simply means we may want to take a closer look. If there are any concerns, our team will talk with you about next steps and, if you choose, help schedule a more detailed evaluation. If a developmental delay is identified, your child may qualify for free services and support to help them grow and succeed.
Why screening matters
The early years are incredibly important. Developmental screenings help catch concerns early—when support can make the biggest difference.
